 Excellent Drawer Safe for the money February 2, 2010

I bought this drawer safe after looking at many others. I was tempted to spend $250 for the bio type, but kept hearing lots of complaints about how well they read finger print. I decided to buy this one just to see if it would work in my nightstand drawer without breaking the bank. I was very surprised. Very heavy and substancial - not flimsy by any means. Will it keep out a professional? No. But it absolutely will keep out children, other adult family members, and the neighborhood punk. As for any exposed wiring - it has a battery pack connected to a wire that velcroes neatly out of the way against the side and under the lip. I would not see how it could ever get shorted out if installed correctly (not rocket science). The code programs easily just read the directions. I use a pattern instead of actually remembering a code. Makes it very easy to open and quick without thinking. We have a 1 yr old baby girl (our first child) and figured it was time to lock up the guns. My wife liked it so much teh next day I ordered one for her drawer. This safe is worth far more than the $32 bucks I paid.

The safe works out of the box like it is supposed to. I guess that's the good part.
The problem is that the 3 1/2 inch model is way too small to hold anything larger than a compact gun. My Glock 35, which is admittedly a large gun, could not even fit through the door, even after trying several different twists and turns. I suspect this small safe would be useless for most any 1911 style .45 caliber handgun as well.
I was impressed with the lock mechanism, but it could definitely be 100% improved by a backup mechanical key lock and buttons that light up similar to a cell phone.
If you are in the market, skip the small one and go for at least the medium.

WARNING!!! The first photo for this lock box shows an actual box attached to the door opening. The dimensions and first photo for this item are very misleading. What you get is basically the face of the box and that is it! It is enclosed, but it is ONLY 3 1/2 INCHES DEEP. I thought I was getting a lock box that was 10 inches deep. I would have even been happy with a 7 1/2 inch depth but 3 1/2 inches is not really a lock box IMO. I am very disappointed. The first photo for this item needs to be removed from this listing! It is very misleading. What I thought I ordered and what I received are very different. BEWARE!

This is a great safe! It will not protect your guns from fire, water, or even an extremely determined thief, but it WILL keep your weapon safely stored in an easy to get to location should you need to access it in a timely manner. I bought this safe to keep my handguns out of the reach of my growing 3 year-old while keeping it close enough to access quickly - it did just that. It takes approx 2 seconds to open, and is plenty quiet. It is well built, and is not a huge eye-soar(no gun safe is pretty to look at). It holds my G23 and my wife's Tomcat with plenty of wiggle room. I have a 9v battery with a Velcro strip on the bottom of the safe should the internal batteries die at an unfortunate time.

If you plan on buying the HOMAK HS10036683 10-by-3-1/2-by-7-1/2-Inch Electronic Access Pistol Box, look at the picture for the HOMAK HS10036684 10-by-5-1/2-by-7-1/2-Inch Electronic Access Pistol Boby. That's the real picture for it. The pictures for the two products need to be switched.
We ordered this product based on the picture (thinking the short and deep one would be better than the tall, shallow one, but we ended up getting the tall shallow one)
